We are counting down the days until our students return and we can hardly wait for the first day. The start of a new school year is such an exciting time full of promise, possibilities, and opportunities. We will be sharing a lot of information as we approach the first day of school as there are many things happening as we prepare for this school season.
Each spring our students select a theme for the coming year to guide our work, frame our mission, and support us in reaching our goals. Our theme for this year is ‘Scouts Strive For Progress Not Perfection.’ Our school is a very good school. We want to be great. Great students, great athletes, great artists, great friends, great musicians, great siblings, and great Scouts. Greatness requires hard work, risk taking, and failure. We are going to work very hard this school year growing together as learners. Our theme reminds us to trust the process, celebrate our accomplishments, get up when we fall down, and to keep grinding to be even better. We don’t strive for the unattainable goal of perfection, but rather we endeavor to get better and be better every single day so that at the end of this school year, we can see how far we’ve come and know that we have the skills to go even further. We’re looking forward to starting our journey together from the first minute of the first day and having fun while working hard on each step of the way.
Our first day with students is Monday, August 26th. School begins promptly at 8:00 and all students will be dismissed at 11:30. Students must be picked up or off campus, by 11:45. Students will be in their Scouts for Scouts (S4S) class all day on the 26th building community and reviewing important procedures and expectations. This work will help all students be prepared for success throughout the school year.
Activities are an important part of our school community and help students build lifelong skills. Our fall sports (cross country, volleyball, and football) begin on Monday, August 19th. Cross country starts at 3:00 and there is a parent meeting near the sports’ shed at 4:45. Football and 7th grade volleyball practice start at 3:30. There is a parent meeting for football at 5:30 near the sports’ shed and the parent meeting for both 7th and 8th grade volleyball in the main gym at 4:45. Practice for 8th grade volleyball is after the parent meeting beginning at 5:15 and ending at 7:00.
Cross country is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Students in 7th and 8th grades can participate in volleyball and football. In order to practice or participate in any activity, students must have a sports physical after May 1 and a signed code of conduct on file. Families also need to view this presentation before their student can participate. Athletic paperwork can be dropped off at the LMS office between 7:00-2:30 Monday through Friday. We will also be collecting paperwork ‘drive-through’ style in the bus lane from 4:30-5:45 on Thursday, August 15th. Student athletes can bring their paperwork to the first practice, but it is best if it is turned in ahead of time so that they do not miss any part of their first practice.
Our student leadership is preparing for an amazing 6th grade orientation from 8:00-11:30 on Tuesday, August 20th. All 6th grade students and their families are encouraged to participate in orientation. At orientation students will meet their classmates, find their lockers, learn about middle school, and get their schedules. It’s a great way to prepare for this important transition. Incoming 6th graders should check in between 8:00-8:30 in the main gym. Students will work with our student leaders in the morning and families should return for a joint family and student session from 11:00-11:30 in the main gym.
Sixth grade students will receive their schedules at orientation. If a student is unable to attend orientation, their schedule will be mailed out. Schedules for 7th and 8th grade students will be placed in the mail on the 16th. Schedules will also be visible in PowerSchool on the 19th. If a student would like to request a schedule change, the link to do so will be available on our website after schedules are sent out. We do our best to grant schedule change requests, but it is not always possible. There are no bad courses at LMS and we encourage students to try a variety of classes so they can explore different options that will help them make informed class choices in the future.
Students and families are invited to participate in a no host open house on Thursday, August 22nd. Our building will be open to families and students from 3:30-6:00 so students can put things in their lockers and find their classes. There will not be any tour guides or teachers available at this time. It is simply a time for students to drop off materials and become comfortable in our building.
Online Registration is now open. All families need to complete this process in PowerSchool every year. This is not to register your student for classes, but to make sure your information is up to date and to grant or deny various permissions for your student for the coming school year such as going on field trips, using technology, and participating in activities.
To complete online registration, log into your PowerSchool Parent Portal account and start the process by clicking on the Online Registration link. If you have forgotten your login credentials, there is a link on the PowerSchool Parent Portal login screen that says “Forgot Username or Password” to recover your login information. Our district code is DLML if you need it. Students will be receiving their Chromebooks on August 29th. If their online registration is not completed prior to that date, they will not receive a Chromebook. Students also cannot participate in activities beginning on the 29th if their online registration is incomplete. Please contact the LMS main office if you need assistance completing your online registration. Help will also be available at back to school night.
Back to school night is Wednesday, August 28th from 5:30-7:15. This is an opportunity for families to meet their student’s teachers, walk their schedule, meet bus drivers, and learn about Laramie Middle School. Due to space limitations, we ask that students and siblings not accompany their families. We hope to see all of our families at back to school night.
There are a variety of ways to stay updated on LMS happenings as we prepare for the start of school and throughout the school year. We are updating our new website daily. We also share information through Facebook, Instagram, and on our blog. We are truly honored that you have chosen to share your student with us. We are looking forward to working alongside you this year as we strive for progress not perfection!
